About the Competition

As a leading name in the welding industry, ESAB is thrilled to sponsor the SteelFab Welding Competition, bringing together passionate welders to showcase their skills and expertise.
Technical Specifications:
  • Welding Process:   SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding)
  • Welding Position:   2G + 3G
  • Coupons:   The design will be shared on the day of the competition
  • Coupon Material:  Carbon Steel ASTM A 36 (10 mm thickness)
  • Electrode (Root):   ESAB OK 53.68 (E7016-1 H4 R) | Diameter: 2.5 mm

Evaluation Criteria

Participants are assessed against three primary technical pillars:

  • Visual Inspection & Weld Quality: Compliance with international standards for surface finish, penetration, and bead consistency.
  • WPS Compliance: Strict adherence to the specified Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) parameters.
  • Completion Time Efficiency: A target completion time of approximately one hour.
Note:
This criterion serves as the decisive tie-breaker should participants achieve equal scores in visual quality and WPS compliance.

Safety Protocols

All competition participants must strictly adhere to the following safety protocols at all times:

  • Mandatory PPE: Approved welding helmets, industrial gloves, full-body protective clothing, and certified safety shoes are strictly required.
  • Eye & Arc Safety: Safety goggles must be worn during slag removal. Never look directly at an active arc without appropriate shielding.
  • Hazard Control: Maintain a safe distance from power sources. Do not handle hot workpieces, touch live electrical components, or wrap cables around your body.
